What a brain dump is
A brain dump is the act of getting every thought out of your head and into one place, without sorting or judging any of it. Tasks, worries, half-ideas, reminders, all of it goes out. The only goal is to empty your mind onto the page or screen.
Why it helps ADHD brains
ADHD often comes with a busy working memory that tries to hold everything at once. Each unfinished thought stays open like a tab, quietly using energy and adding to the noise. Writing or speaking them out closes those open loops. Your brain can let go of holding them, which usually brings a wave of relief and a little more room to think.
How to brain dump, step by step
- Pick one place to capture. A notebook, a notes app, or your voice. One place, so nothing scatters.
- Set a short timer. Five or ten minutes is plenty. A limit makes it feel safe to start.
- Let everything out. Write or say each thought as it comes. Do not fix spelling, order, or wording.
- Do not organize yet. Sorting while you dump slows you down and reopens the loops. Just keep emptying.
- Sort later, gently. When the timer ends, take a breath, then mark which items are real next steps and which can wait.
Make it easier with your voice
On days when typing feels like too much friction, speaking is faster and kinder. In Lumina Flo you can do a voice brain dump, say everything out loud, and let the app turn your words into organized tasks for you. It clears the clutter without making you sort each item by hand.
When to brain dump
- When you feel overwhelmed and cannot tell where to begin.
- At the start of the day, to see what is actually on your plate.
- Before bed, so a racing mind has somewhere to put its thoughts.
Once your head is clearer, it is easier to pick a task that fits your current energy and actually start.
